The Cornermen

2023 & 2024 grant recipient

Project funded by the Powerhouse Grant - Grant medium and project ongoing

The Cornermen is a men’s mental health and suicide prevention service offering 1-2-1 support, group sessions, and advocacy for men over 18 who are at risk of suicide or in need of community based mental health support. We do this by combining suicide prevention techniques with physical activity or going for walks. We provide transport to those who may be isolated through lack of transport and build community by hosting group session such as boxing, music lessons. We work in partnership with other local services.

“The Cornermen came at a time I was on the cusp of losing everything I had built over the last few years. I was a broken man. As nervous as I was, I made it to my first meeting, and was instantly at ease.”

Impact achieved so far:

We aimed to get 80 referrals from the Powerhouse area and we exceeded that with 88 referrals. The majority are self-referrals which indicates those reaching out to us are not known to NHS services. This is the biggest at risk group for suicide. We also receive referrals from other local agencies and services.

40% of men we worked for, from the Powerhouse area required transport, because they had no access to their own. Anecdotally we know the main reason for this was because they are having financial or criminal history issues. We can also be sure by local knowledge that the pickup points some referrals request to be collected from are areas in the town of deprivation and anti-social behavior.
