12th Didcot Scouts

2022 and 2023 Grant Recipients - 3 month update

2 Cub Camps have been supported by The Didcot Powerhouse Fund grant this year and the two case studies are highlighted below. Beavers range from 6 – 8 years of age, so the biggest challenge for most of them was facing their fears and being away from home. Ditching their usual busy routines and with no electronics to hand, the Beavers were able to focus on themselves and each other, supporting and cheering on their fellow Beavers during the activities.

Cub Camp July 2023 – Dry Sandford

“Cub camp this year started dry and then turned wet for the rest of the weekend! But even with all the rain, there were no complaints from the Cubs who just love being outdoors with their friends. Camp started by putting up the tents and enjoying a cup of hot chocolate. Then rounders in the rain, followed by tent peg carving, hot chocolate, pancake making and free time.”

“One of the biggest hits this year was the wildlife. We were incredibly lucky to see baby frog/toads hopping around the camp and we spent time examining the 2 amphibians to understand and recognise the differences between them. With the bustle of life and the built up environment most of us live in it was great for the Cubs to have this opportunity to be surrounded by nature and beautiful wildlife.”

“In the evening it was campfire building, s’mores, sing song, followed by more hot chocolate!”

Beaver Camp August 2023 - Youlbury

“Another wet camp for the Beavers so their tents were put up as quickly as possible to keep their kit dry. However, rain wasn’t going to stop play for these Beavers and their team of enthusiastic leaders, so they started their activities with some archery and the climbing wall. After lunch it was onto the giant swing, crate stacking and some free time to explore. The evening was followed by campfire songs and dancing. The camp was a great success. “

Project Summary

A discretionary grant from The Didcot Powerhouse Fund will provide bursaries for young people from less advantaged backgrounds, enabling them to participate in camping and other activities. Scouting helps young people to improve their key skills including social skills, team work, leadership ability and confidence. A highly successful weekend camp also took place in June 2022.
